Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on Petro Poroshenko’s citation of the Russian poem ‘Farewell, Farewell, Unwashed Russia’ by Mikhail Lermontov when celebrating the introduction of a visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU, while speaking at the annual ‘Direct Line’ Q&A session in Moscow, Thursday.
Putin complimented Poroshenko on his knowledge of Russian literature and advised the Ukrainian president not to relax, saying there are more “blue uniforms of gendarmes” in the EU, where he leads Ukraine to, than in Russia.
The Russian leader also stated that Poroshenko should close his offshore accounts before claiming to be European. “If someone wants to be European, they should first close their offshore accounts and then speak of people’s welfare,” Putin said.
During the session, people from across Russia have the opportunity to contact the president via telephone, text message or social networks.
